Andrew van der Vaart, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist at Sheppard Pratt’s Towson campus, where he serves as an attending physician on the adult inpatient units. He utilizes a range of treatment modalities, including medications, psychotherapy, and neuromodulation. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. van der Vaart is a principal investigator at the Institute for Advanced Diagnostics and Therapeutics. He has published over 15 peer-reviewed articles on the pharmacology and neurobiology of mood disorders, psychosis, and addiction. Dr. van der Vaart is also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he trains medical students and lectures to psychiatry residents. He completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Maryland / Sheppard Pratt, as part of the Physician-Scientist Training Program. He earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, and he completed his undergraduate degree in Cognitive Science as a Jefferson Scholar at the University of Virginia.
