In the United States, someone dies of suicide every 15 minutes. It is the 2nd leading cause of death among adolescents and adults under the age of 35, and the 9th leading cause of death overall. Research shows that 64% of people who attempt suicide saw their primary care provider in the month prior. Therefore, primary care is an important setting for identifying and addressing individuals at risk for suicide.
Sheppard Pratt created this curriculum to provide primary care providers and clinics with relevant clinical information, examples, and workflows to improve suicide screening and management. It features four veteran clinicians—one psychiatrist, two psychologists, and a social worker—to offer a multidisciplinary perspective. Each lecture is eligible for 1 CEU/CME credit that is recognized by all professional boards—physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and professional counselors—at no cost. These talks were supported by Grant Number 6H79FG000999-01M001 from SAMHSA. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of SAMHSA.
Sheppard Pratt sponsors many other talks about suicide. For a list of all free and on-demand offerings for continuing education credit, go here.
