Medical Director of Ruxton House to Become Medical Director of The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt

Thomas Franklin, M.D., to take the helm of nationally renowned residential psychiatric unit

Sheppard Pratt Health System is pleased to announce that Thomas Franklin, M.D., has been appointed the new medical director of The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt, a premier, private-pay residential unit that provides psychiatric care through an intensive assessment and treatment program on Sheppard Pratt Health System’s Towson, Maryland campus. Dr. Franklin previously served as medical director of Ruxton House, The Retreat’s transitional living program that provides a longer stay for patients of The Retreat to help them transition back into the community.

Stepping down from 12 years as medical director of The Retreat is Don Ross, M.D., who plans to still continue working at The Retreat running therapy groups, seeing individual patients as their attending psychiatrist, and supervising study groups and DBT consultation groups.

“While deciding to step to the side was a difficult decision, I am confident that Dr. Thomas Franklin, my friend and colleague for more than 11 years, is more than ready to take the helm,” said Dr. Ross. “Dr. Franklin has been on the forefront of a number of recent changes: the addition of Ruxton House two years ago and the development of our recently expanded co-occurring disorders treatment track. I know he has what it takes to meet the needs of our patients and lead us into the next decade and beyond.”

Dr. Franklin is also a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and an advanced candidate at the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis. He is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry, and has extensive experience in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, addictions, and co-occurring disorders.

With just 6,200 patient days per year, The Retreat is host to a select group of patients from all over the United States. With extensive expertise in working with professionals at a crossroads, young adults desiring increased independence and personal responsibility, and adults facing retirement and loss, problems in marriage, and other interpersonal difficulties, The Retreat treats the full spectrum of mental health disorders, including depression and treatment resistant depression, addictive disorders, anxiety disorders, and borderline personality disorder.
