Changing Lives Together

Q&A with Monica Beeman

What is your job at Sheppard Pratt?

I'm a therapist with the Offsite Counseling Services program. I meet with clients in the community and at school to address mental health issues.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I like to have my coffee outside while listening to the cicadas and reading to my toddler. After dropping off my child at day care, I hit the road. During the summer, I drive to meet with clients at home and in the community. During the school year, I’ll meet with kids in their schools. In the evenings, I may have some telehealth appointments. Then I like to get outside and see our animals, walk with my daughter, husband, and dog down the dirt driveway to greet our alpacas, chickens, and rabbit. We have two peacocks that are currently residents now, so they may follow us.

What do you enjoy most about working at Sheppard Pratt?

I appreciate working with my clients and families. Also, my coworkers are wonderful and supportive. Anytime we have questions or information to share, we reach out to one another or just to check in to make sure we are all doing ok.

What advice do you have for your students?

Know your self-worth and find time for self-care.

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

My daughter! She is so curious about so many things. It’s a reminder for mindfulness and to slow down, look at the world around you, and appreciate the small things.

What has been your proudest moment at work?

Organizing and facilitating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) groups. Receiving positive feedback from participants also encourages me to continue the work.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to spend time with family and friends and talk to my mom and sisters. They live out of state, but we are super close. I love to go hiking or take my toddler for a bike ride along the C&O Canal and look for turtles and blue herons.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet and why?

Mother Theresa, to ask about her life and work, and her incredible patience and perseverance.

What is something you have done outside of work that you are proud of?

Volunteered for the Red Cross.
