How long have you worked at Sheppard Pratt?
17 years. I began as a one-to-one aide when I was 22. I started because I needed a better job, but I knew right away that this was the right work for me and would become my career.
What do you enjoy most about working at Sheppard Pratt?
I am making a difference with these kids. Seeing a student follow my instructions is always a win. It is really fulfilling. A lot of times, we are the most consistent thing that these kids have. We make this place as safe and stable as possible for them every day.
What advice do you have for your students?
Always be honest and always be yourself. Be willing to accept feedback—negative or positive. Try your best—that’s all we can ask of you. If you’re doing that, you’re succeeding.
What is your biggest source of inspiration?
My family. I am a family guy. Being able to provide my wife and kids with the things I didn’t have growing up keeps me going. My family is everything. I have three girls: Summer, Autumn, and Winter, my 15-year-old son, Khalil, and my wife.
What has been your proudest moment at work?
My proudest moment was being honored by Sheppard Pratt with a spotlight! I don’t need kudos. I am here for the students. I come here every day to make sure everyone is okay. But seeing others within the organization recognize my value means a lot to me.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to play football. I play defensive tackle for a professional flag football team, the Maryland Venom. My favorite thing about playing is just being out there every Sunday. It is like therapy to me. And to be 38 and able to compete with these young cats … I get a kick out of that.
What is your favorite place you have traveled?
Disney World. Everything I do now is for my kids, but I think I was more excited than they were. Seeing them enjoy it, seeing the fireworks and the smiles on their faces, that was really nice. I have traveled all over the world with my wife, but Disney was special. The magic is real!
