Changing Lives Together

A Q&A with Jonathan Houghton

How long have you worked at Sheppard Pratt?

In total, I’ve been here for 28 years. I’ve worked in many roles throughout Sheppard Pratt’s Rehab and Recovery service line, which offers supported living programs, day programs, and other skills training for adults with mental illness. Now I am the program director for the residential rehabilitation program in Catonsville. I help manage and support staff and clients.

What do you enjoy most about working at Sheppard Pratt?

I enjoy the various challenges and witnessing how the clients we serve improve their lives. Many clients I’ve worked with over the years have been able to move out and live independently in the community and continue working. I consider that real success.

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

I’m often amazed at our clients’ tenacity in the face of obstacles.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Anything outdoors: mountain biking, backpacking, and camping with family and friends. I’m in Patapsco Valley State Park several times each week with my dog or riding my bike. I like to go camping or backpacking a couple of times per year in West Virginia or George Washington National Forest in Virginia.

What is something you have done outside of work that you are proud of?

I’m proud of the part I played in raising two wonderful children, now young adults in their freshman years of college.

Favorite place you’ve traveled?

Hiking the North Rim of the Grand Canyon was great. I loved traveling through high mountain meadows and seeing buffalo. The dramatic change hiking down a couple of thousand feet into the canyon with beautiful views and increasing heat was incredible.

What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

I like to spend an evening listening to music outside on the deck or by the fire pit. My favorite times of the year are when seasons are changing: the first cool nights of fall or when it starts warming up in the spring. Those are good times to sit out by a fire and listen to music. I like classic rock, punk, hip-hop, and blues.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Flying a plane would be amazing.
