Clinical Education

Sheppard Pratt Wrote the Book on Hospital Psychiatry

Sheppard Pratt just released the second edition of the “Textbook of Hospital Psychiatry,” the definitive resource that serves as a guide for clinicians working across the field of mental health. Moving beyond the hospital wall, the second edition covers the entire continuum of care to include crisis and community-based services.

Edited by Harsh K. Trivedi, MD, MBA, president and CEO of Sheppard Pratt, and Steven S. Sharfstein, MD, MPA, his immediate predecessor in both roles, the latest iteration of “the textbook” offers recommendations for optimal treatment, staffing, and care. It features new chapters on family involvement and safety, federal and local financing, and information on measurement-based care.

“You will not find a more comprehensive resource in terms of hospital care and across the entire continuum of care,” Dr. Trivedi said. “While there are textbooks that cover individual disorders, the unique thing about this resource is that it is the only primer for any program, hospital, or community seeking to provide high quality care—including specialty care—regardless of where they are in their mental health journey.”

Additional sections on “the future of hospital psychiatry” describe the integration of treatment across settings and providers and examine how telemedicine can extend the reach of clinicians. The goal of the textbook is to offer a road map for the clinical, administrative, and financial steps necessary to help providers develop key services and advance hospital psychiatry in the United States.

The second edition is “intended to energize the field to advance care and advocate for the funding needed to implement state-of-the-art care in every community.”

“Across mental health, everyone acknowledges that we need to do more to enhance the treatment of patients with these disorders,” Dr. Trivedi said. “We’re all looking for that magic formula. As we have shown at Sheppard Pratt, we can offer the necessary, comprehensive services in a way that is financially viable and sustainable. This is what every community across the country needs.”
